I totally agree with @TheKnight as to seeing a doctor. It's better to know what the problem really is and find a solution rather than waiting and not knowing why you're not conceiving.

Do not lose hope. We have a family friend who also waited for a baby for years. Eventually, they decided to adopt a baby boy. A year or two from adopting a child, the woman got pregnant (10 years to be exact), and not just once but twice! They now have three grown up kids - 1 boy and 2 girls, and they very much love each other.

You don't need a doctor to determine when you're fertile. Get a basal body thermometer and chart your temperature for a few months, first thing every morning. Fertile days are marked by a slight increase in body temperature. Sex around those days should increase the chance for pregnancy.
Conversely, you can use this same method to try and avoid pregnancy and make sure not to have intercourse during these days, or use protection if you only want to rely on your body rather than hormonal contraceptives. Obviously, this method is not completely reliable in preventing pregnancy.

You are absolutely right! That is exactly what we did when we had our first baby. We knew the cycle and we know how it works. We got the perfect timing and we already knew we were going to have our first baby right before he was conceived. Knowing your cycle would really help a lot also if you are not ready yet to have baby.

I think it would be good advice to check with the doctor first, to find out whatever is wrong with you or you're partner. There are many factors like the RH Negative / Positive Blood incompatibility, You and your partners stress level, Your frequency of sexual activity, Health, etc. So it's best to get the opinion of your doctor first. Also I read in an article that most women who took contraceptive pills in the past takes longer to get pregnant.

Ordinarily and practically three years are more than enough to wait. By the way, you failed to mention the sex condition of your hubby. He might be the cause. I have one teacher in my school who has been married for 8 years. I solve her problem for they lack constant communication. I said to spend a quality to her hubby, prepare his favorite foods and everything and a matter of a month or so she told me she's pregnant.

For couples who are having difficulty to conceive, one of the factors that can affect pregnancy is stress. Studies show that couples with a lot of stress, preoccupied with their profession or has a fast paced lifestyle takes more time to conceive. So it's best to take a vacation from stress and go somewhere to relax or take some time off from work or business and live a leisurely life. This would also give the couple more quality time together.
